At the library I work at, there seems to be a constant battle between the librarians and the IT staff. From fixing a simple printer issue to managing a large project, there is an ongoing power struggle. What got me thinking about this was one of the librarians talking about how they wish they could incorporate videos on some of the online subject guides (similar to what we are doing on our Wiki for Work). For some reason or another, IT has said no to this, giving some sort of lame excuse. Maybe the worst part of all is that the librarians just kind of sit and take it as gospel, since the all-knowing IT staff said no. Of course, maybe IT has a really good reason, but I have a hunch that they really don’t want to deal with the librarians. All of this is a real shame, because I think that incorporating multimedia into the website would reach a lot of people for reasons we have discussed in class.
Are things similar where you work, library or not? If things are better, how does your workplace encourage the content/tech collaboration (sound familiar?) to come out with a great product? To me, I think there has a to be a central vision, and if there are separate visions, no matter how good each one may be, they are both going to go nowhere, because the success relies on contribution from both sides. I’d love to hear what everyone thinks!

Wow, where are you working? It sounds like IT is running the library to the detriment of library patrons. Maybe you should create an online subject guide as an example of what can be done. Show it to the library director and see if you can get it posted.
